The Jing Video Capture Project from TechSmith

TechSmith, the company that created SnagIt, one of the most popular screen capture programs, and Camtasia, one of the most popular video capture programs, has been working on a new hybrid project called Jing.

jing The purpose of Jing is to make simple video capture simple, easy and Free for users that do not need professional grade video capture from Camtasia.

They also make the upload and hosting of that video, simple, easy and free as well!

That’s quite a package for nothing.  Truth be told, they are still working to put together this project and future versions may offer advanced options with a money component involved, or possibly with an advertising angle.

I had a chance to preview the software at the Podcast and New Media Expo in California at the end of September.

When I first tried to download and install the free trial, I ran into a problem with the installation as it required Microsoft.net Framework 3.0.  The auto Jing installer could not correctly trigger the install of Microsoft.net (free also), but I am today manually downloading it myself.  So I will let you know how it works out this time around.

How Can this Free Video Capture Tool Be Used?

This is not a video capture program that will help you convert video camera video onto the internet.   Its not exactly a YouTube related tool.

It can enable you to capture your steps or processes for doing something on your computer, in a very simple just a few click process.

  • So if you want to share a quick video with your daughter about where on a website to find baby clothes.  This could work.
  • If you want to shoot your coworker a quick example of hot to do something in excel, and you do not want to spend 30 minutes editing video, this can help you complete the entire task in seconds as opposed to minutes or hours.
  • If you want to share a quick video with your blog readers, you can easily upload the video all in one step and share it on your blog.
