Blog Marketing Writing Tips

June 26th, 2007 by admin

Raj Dash at Performancing wrote a nice little article on how to write better for a blog.  You do not have to be Hemmingway to be a good blog writer.

However, Raj points out some of the basic concepts that you need to set as goals to keep your writing style in check with what readers looking at articles through a browser are capable of dealing with.

He covers the following points in more depth:

  1. Watch Run-on Sentences
  2. Use Visual Variety
  3. Write Accessibly
  4. Write Cohesively
  5. Use Varying post Lengths
  6. Edit Ruthlessly
  7. Set it Aside

I would only add a few additional points to Raj’s details.

Pictures in Blogs

It is important to place pictures in blogs.  It breaks up the tet and gives the eye a break while reinforcing a point if you have chosen a good picture or graphic.

Use White or negative Space Effectively

In addition to pictures and text you need to organize the overall layout of an article like an old fashioned Newspaper typesetter.   You want to balance text with pictures and the combination of pictures an text should be balanced with white space or negative space (space without words) in a way that is graphically pleasing.

Tip on Determining if its Graphically Pleasing

One way to figure this out is to zoom out of your browser as you are staring at a published version of your work. You can also step back away from the screen, but you want to view as much of the article as possible.

Now as you are looking at the article from a distance ask your self if it looks visually balanced? Visually appealing? Does it have any good artistic qualities about it?

Or, . . .

Does it look like a great big long bunch of scribble?

  • If you answered yes, the article is probably not graphically balanced!
